ONE Mile of Safety

The Weston Public Schools

Campus Traffic Plan

For the past few years the Weston Public School System has been immersed in school construction projects.  Much of that time was spent working around demolition crews, moving classrooms, converting mechanical systems, and managing the endless list of construction related issues that impact students, staff and the community.  With most of the actual construction successfully completed, the administration, in cooperation with the police department, spent this summer thoughtfully crafting a “Campus Traffic Plan” that would address long standing concerns about the safety on School Road and within the grounds of each school.

With 2600 students and 376 staff driving onto campus each school day, the school district must provide a safe environment for students, staff and pedestrian traffic.  This goal has four primary objectives.  First, all drivers will obey the 20 mile per hour speed limit on School Road, which measures one mile.  Second, the school district will design a safe pick-up and drop-off pattern for students.  Third, the school district will control the traffic flow on campus during pick-up and drop-off times in a manner that limits vehicular congestion and back-ups.  Fourth, all drivers will park in designated parking spots.  Vehicles cannot park in areas designated as “No Parking” zones, and there is absolutely no parking permitted on School Road.  With this in mind, the administration has developed a multi-faceted plan to achieve these objectives.

Objective One:  The following changes have been made on School Road:

  • There will be orange traffic cones lining the road.
  • There will be additional speed limit signs along the road.
  • The two existing flashing speed limit signs will be operational.
  • Several Traffic Agents will be stationed on School Road to monitor and provide traffic control.
  • Local police will patrol road for speeders.

Objective Two:  Drivers will adhere to the following changes when dropping-off and picking-up their students:

Objective Three:  Drivers will experience the following improvements to the traffic flow:
  • Reduced waiting time when sitting behind school buses.
  • Reduced waiting time when stopped at pedestrian crossings.
  • A smoother flow of traffic at intersections and parking lots.
  • Safer travel along School Road as traffic speed is monitored.

Objective Four:  Drivers will respect the following designated No Parking Areas:

  • Anywhere along School Road.
  • Unauthorized parking in High School Student and Faculty lots.
  • Parking in the Intermediate and Hurlbutt staff lots during pickup.
  • Central Office lot.

We invite all members of the Weston Public School community to join us in creating a safe environment for students and staff.
